we may shave off a couple of degrees to the number before the sun comes up. a lot of clouds breaking up in and around the city. across long island, snow flurries in portions of sullivan county. ulster, dutchess county. then the bigger picture shows a trough out to -- it's going to form our storm system tomorrow. more on that later on. in the meantime, about today, it's about the gusty breezes, a lot of clouds and sun at times. 49 at noon. looking for a high temperature of 52 this afternoon. all right. let's get the bird's eye view on the commute so far this morning. a lot of the accidents have cleared. that's good news. but we have delays on the cross bronx expressway. what else is new? two lanes shut down by the sheridan expressway. it's getting slow out there. head over to the belt parkway, we have the accident eastbound before erskine. after erskine street. that's in the left lane. delays headed eastbound a bit.

traffic on the 4s. >> thanks very much. breaking news in manhattan. police have the bleaker street subway station shut down. they say someone slashed a man on the platform. "today in new york's" tracie strahan. what can you tell us? >> reporter: michael, this is an active investigation and a large police presence. not just on the street level here. belowground. play video now what it looked like when we arrived. ficers all around, we saw detectives descending into the subway station here at bleaker street when we arrived. police are telling us right now that a male suffered slash wounds to both his neck and face right on the platform before 4:00 this morning. the suspect fled in an unknown direction. it's unclear if it was the result of an altercation. we were able to speak to a witness who tended to the man after offensive stabbed.

we had gone down the wrong side of the subway. we saw him coming up the subway steps. he had like -- he was bleeding heavily. that's what we saw. we sort of helped him out. put pressure on his wrists. >> reporter: that victim was taken to a local hospital. his condition is unknown at this point. as we bring you back live, michael, not only are the 4 and 6 trains by passing the bleaker street station, we've seen police rope off this area of bleaker street from the crosby street side, the mulberry side. they're not letting anyone get into this area as the investigation continues. back to you. >> tracie, thank you very much. in queens, a high school student faces weapons charges for allegedly trying to attack another student with this large knife. a 16-year-old student brought the dagger to the high school in elmhurst. he tried to use it on a female student and threatened to slash her in the throat. the department of education says police were were immediately notified. parents in a connecticut community hit hard by gun

how a gun got into a middle school. parents wanted answers from newtown school officials last night. this is the newtown in connecticut. 46-year-old science teacher jason adams was arrested with a gun strapped to his belt. 4 investigates has learned that adams, who has a gun permit, first told investigate torsion he forgot to remove the weapon. then admitted he felt threatened. newtown officials do not believe there was malicious intent. >> it was an egregious error of judgment to have that weapon on person onchool grounds within our school. >> a gunl got into the school. that should be a wake-up call to us that says something more needs to be done. >> he faces possession charges and is on administrative leave. new this morning, a freight train hit a car in saddlebrook new jersey. our crew checked out the scene a short time ago. the car had some damage but the driver and passenger both seemed okay.

trains 4 and 6 trains are by passing the bleaker street station in both directions. we'll keep you updated on that. everything looks good as far as the rams. on the buses, quite a few details. the ones listed here. quite a few in queens. alternate side of the street parking rules are in effect and more weather and traffic ahead on the 4s. lauren, thank you very much. now this morning, investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a fire that killed one man at a home on long island. they say the fire started in the basement at the home on grant avenue in bay shore about 10:00 last night. the brentwood fire department rushed to the home to put out the flames. 62-year-old curly tutt was killed. several other adults and children who lived in that home were able to escape. also new this morning, police are looking for a vehicle allegedly used to try and lure a 12-year-old boy in rockland county. it happened in pearl river yesterday morning. the man inside a small silver

the suspect allegedly took off. a small white dog was seen in the front passenger seat. today in the race for president, republican john kasich will be upstate while donald trump is shaking up his campaign. a new convention manager, political insiders say he's preparing for a floor fight. ted cruz was in brooklyn. he looked for votes in new york's april 19th primary. >> new york gets 95 delegates. every congressional district gets to elect three delegates. so i'm here asking for your help. >> it's a great place. i love new york. >> john kasich entered the debate over cruz's earlier criticism of what cruz called new york values. kasich was at a deli in the bronx. former mayor rudy giuliani is not happy with ted cruz's attack on new york values. that's one reason he's voting

giuliani and trump are long-time friends and giuliani is quietly advising the trump campaign. turning to the democrats, bernds is not backing away from his latest attack on hillary clinton. he called her unqualified to be president. yesterday, clinton refused to strike back and said she'd support sanders over trump or cruz any day. we'll hear more from these candidates at 5:30. 5:08 right now. a plan to limit the places where costume characters are allowed in times square. that's moving forward. new york city council approved a bill yesterday to set up specific zones where people dress in costumes can pose for pictures and then ask for money. the new rules will apply to the topless painted women and tour bus ticket sellers and the new zones would be in place by june. city council passing legislation that aims to help uber passengers. it requires her to give customers an estimate. just how much the rides are going to cost and prevents uber

it's 5:14. here are four things to know this morning. new jersey transit is warning riders about possible delays this weekend. amtrak is doing map nance work on the tracks between secaucus and newark penn station. trains could be running 15 minutes late. crews are working to repair a retaining wall along the henry hudson parkway. until 7:00 this morning, expect lane closures northbound starting at 110th street. then more work is going to take place overnight this weekend. whole foods announced plans for the first lower priced grocery store chain that will open in los angeles next month. it's called 365.

plans for one in our area yet. the irs is teaming up with 7-eleven to help people pay their tax bill. the agency announced anyone without a bank account or credit card can visit the 7-eleven and pay an outstanding bill. time for weather and traffic. weather picture, pretty quiet and gentle this morning. it's a little gusty in terms of the wind. that's the way it is throughout the day. plenty of clouds for the home opener. i think we get breaks of sunshine as well. a wintry mix for tomorrow. wet snow and cold rain, especially in the city along the west. we'll show you -- trending milder finally next week. not huge warmup but closer to where we should be this time much year. temperatures this morning, blairstown 39. sparta 38. mine hill same thing at 39. califon 41. go towards the coast, milder in the mid-40s. across long island, coastal connecticut down the jersey shore, generally the range of temperatures between 43 and 46 degrees.

cover overhead right now in the city. but there's more clouds to the north and west. in fact, a few scattered snow flurries across the poconos and catskills. don't be surprised to see a flake or two there. the big picture shows a big trough of low pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere. that's that carved out area. you can see the rotation of the little pieces of energy that rotate around that trough. one more significant piece of energy comes through tomorrow. we'll show you that on future tracker. today, couple of sprinkles or a flurry north of town. notice the clouds thin out from time to time. close to game time. hopefully a little bit of sun peeking through at citi field as they raise the flag. it clears out later in the day toward evening. our night is fine. just chilly tonight. but nothing to worry about in terms of snow or rain. clouds thicken up. this is 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. you see the system off to the south. this particular model keeping a lot of the moisture south of us. light rain in the mix breaks out around 2:00 in the afternoon. the steadiest precipitation seems to be south southern jersey could see more snow out of this and west of the city as

it's gone by tomorrow night and sunday. we're back to some sunshine. in terms of snow accumulations. this is primarily on grassy areas and slushy coating. locally, 2 inches as you go west and southwest of the city perhaps. again, mainly on the grass. roads will stay wet. city, i don't see it being a big problem. just the fact that there's snowflakes mixing in the air at times. the home opener for the mets against the phils. it's chilly. could there be a sprinkle? nothing to slow down the game. 52 the expected high in the city for today. north and west, little chillier temperatures staying in the 40s. down to the south, long branch, heights town, you'll be generally in the low 50s as well. low 40s tomorrow. wintry mix. dries out tomorrow night. cold. slips below freezing. upper 40s on sunday. rain returns later monday into tuesday and drying out, back to the 50s wednesday and thursday. let's find out how the commute is rolling along on a friday morning. lauren? >> pretty nicely for most.

there, including fdr drive construction. heading southbound, a slow ride here. you have the right lane blocked. so just two lanes getting by. another problem on the roadway. heading further north here on the harlem river drive. excuse me, it's the harlem reifer drive-by. minor delays through here. take a look at the alexander hamilton bridge. things are moving nicely. westbound heading into the sheridan expressway, you have roadwork and delays out there. the major commuter lines look good. the 4 and 6 train by passing bleeker street in both directions because of a police investigation. >> lauren, thanks. in the cnbc money report, after years of price increases, it's actually going to be cheaper to mail a letter this weekend. a temporary rate increase granted for the u.s. postal service in 2014 is expected to expire on sunday.

the price of a stamp is going to drop from 49 cents to $.47. postcards will be a penny cheaper. you can send them for $.34. all right. police chases are common in los angeles. one has social media buzzing this morning. two burglary suspects led police on a bizarre high-speed chase yesterday. during the chase they popped the top of a ford mustang convertible and waved at other drivers. the car even did doughnuts on hollywood boulevard. a tmz tour bus tried unsuccessfully to cut them off. the suspects were eventually arrested but not before taking selfies and giving high five toss onlookers. a rocket launch planned to expand the international space station in a way that's never been a at the present timed before. the rocket is going to carry an inflatable housing module. the module will be about 6 by 6 when it's folded up and shipped to the space station.

to be the size of a small rv. the goal is to one day be able to use an inflatable module to get astronauts more rooms on missions deep into space. fascinating. right now there's a reward for a stuffed animal who went out of this world. it's sam the dog. it's a mascot of english lakes. that's a resort company in the uk. the english lakes teamed up and attached sam to a giant balloon. sent sam into orbit. camera caught the whole thing. but when sam re-entered the atmosphere, he came apart from the equipment. not himself. but apart from the equipment. the company is offering a free four-night hotel stay to anyone who finds sam or something close to him. >> he looks like lola, lauren's dogment. >> oh, no. >> lola is safe. >> today the first of its kind art show is taking place in washington heights. it's an art fair devoted to artists from the dominican

the cub was rescued from a 220 acre brushfire in florida. >> lake county firefighters nicknamed him smoky junior. there's no sign of his mom, though. officials from the florida fish and wildlife commission are making sure the cub is okay. he's tiny. in california, a marriage proposal went terribly wrong for a man who wanted to take his relationship to new heights. 27-year-old michael banks. that's him being rescued off of morrow rock by a helicopter. he climbed up a rock to propose to his girlfriend via face time. his girlfriend did say yes. she wasn't too happy with him. banks was ticketed as well for the illegal climb. then he was arrested on drug charges. you know what, didn't go well except for the yes. >> like to say how not to propose. >> what not do. still ahead, the big

"today in new york" starts now. good morning everyone. it's friday morning, april 8th. i'm darlene rodriguez. i'm michael gargiulo. storm team 4's chris cimino here with a friday forecast. hate to be talking about snow this time of year, chris. >> it's always uncomfortable to say that in april. it shouldn't be a big deal. more of a nuisance. that's going to be tomorrow into tomorrow evening. it's basically dry out there right now. eastern long island, temperatures between 40 and 45.

north and west, lower 40s. the coldest numbers we could find. monticello monticello, the catskills, we're seeing a few snow flurries scattered early this morning. they're kind of falling apart. not a big deal. the clouds are breaking up for the time being. they'll be back -- we may see a sprinkle in one or two spots. a dry day and night coming our way. tomorrow, we have to deal with the rain/snow mix. look for the -- upper 40s at noontime. first pitch close to 50. 52-degree high today. we'll talk about that snow threat for tomorrow coming up on the 4s. the latest on the commute if you're headed out the door. >> they're seeing delays on the connecticut turnpike in bridgeport. there's roadwork by exit 29. delays are pretty heavy heading into this area. leave yourself extra time if you're headed northbound. >> westbound by the sheridan expressway. that will be out there for a

delays past the bronx river parkway. more weather and traffic on the 4s. lauren, thank you. 5:31 right now. breaking news in manhattan. someone slashed a man on the subway platform at the bleecker street station. tracie strahan was the first reporter on the scene. trace, good morning. >> reporter: darlene, even though this happened underground, i can tell you this entire area has been roped off, people being diverted away. step out of the way and show you officers that are keeping watch at the bleecker street station. if your travels take you on the 4 and 6 train. we'll show you video of why that's the case. we're told that a male suffered slash wounds to both his neck and face on the platform just before 4:00 this morning. right now, police are on the hunt for a suspect. fled in an unknown direction. they haven't given us a major description of who this could be. they're saying it was a male suspect and all of this happened right on the platform below.

a witness who said he tended to that man. he was bleeding heavily. he has been taken to a local hospital for treatment. again, darlene, no estimate as to when this area will be reopened or when trains will be running through this area. >> thanks so much, tracie. there's been an arrest in another subway attack. a 15-year-old girl is now facing charms for allegedly stabbing a teenage boy on a c train in bedford-stuyvesant on wednesday. crimestoppers, a tip led them to the arrest. the 13-year-old victim is expected to be okay. happening now, police are looking for a driver involved in a deadly hit and run in queens. there's a story we brought you on "today in new york" yesterday morning. searching for a dark-colored toyota seen in this surveillance video. a 45-year-old man died when officers say the vehicle hit him on 21st street near 30th road in astoria. police arrested a woman who allegedly stole a baby stroller

27-year-old woman here, she allegedly sent a young child to steal the stroller from the front porch of a home in north corona last sunday. she's charged with petit larceny and child endangerment. in long island, a former baby-sitter is charged with stalking a family. 29-year-old casey evans was fired back in november. last week she allegedly tried to sign out the family's 4-year-old boy from school without his parents' permission. on the same day, investigators claim she broke into the child's home in sayville to leave him a present. pope francis is expected to release a new document in about a half hour. it will detail his thoughts on marriage and family. the declaration comes off of two years of talks between the pope, bishops and cardinals and a poll taken of catholics and their congregations worldwide. the document not expected to significantly change the church's stance on same-sex marriage. but it is expected to address the issue of whether divorced

receive communion. almost, it might possibly change rules regarding annulments and the procedure for getting them. >> right. we see pope francis when he comes out and says these sort of things and everybody is watching and waiting and seeing how the rest of the church reacts. time for weather and traffic on the 4s. it's friday morning. chris, you said it was quiet. that's a good thing. we're going to hang on to that. >> it's a good finish to the week. it could be nice if it were warmer. can't get greedy. a dry day ahead. a sprinkle or snow flurry well to the north and west. it stays chilly for the mets home opener. temperature around 50 degrees at that point. i think we'll get sun at times. it could be a sprinkle passing through in a few locations. it's the west wind that stays gusty. throughout the day, making it feel chillier then. right now at 45. we've got clouds out there. but they broke up for the time being. that will regather again from time to time.

bizarre home invasion. luis rosales says a man and woman knocked on his apartment door in jersey city last month. when he answered they forced their way into his home. rosales says the man threatened him with a knife and the woman sprayed his eyes with pepper spray. they ransacked his apartment and then headed right to the refrigerator where they had yogurt and chicken. >> she tell me, poppy, i hungry. like that. touch the stomach and say poppy, i hungry. >> the couple also grabbed mr. rosales' wallet before they took off. fortunately, he was not seriously injured. today in presidential politics, senator bernie sanders will hold rallies in his hometown, brooklyn. while hillary clinton looks for votes upstate. she needed five swipes of her metro card. in an exclusive "today" show interview, she dismissed the latest attack by bernie sanders

strahan was the first reporter on the scene. tracie? >> reporter: darlene, we do have an update for you now. we can tell you that that male victim is at bellevue hospital listed in stable condition. he's suffered slash wounds to his face and neck just before 3:30 this morning. the hunt is on for his attacker. we'll show you video of the large police presence surrounding the bleecker street station. it still does at this hour. this is a slashing that police say happened on the 6 train platform just before 3:30 this morning. it's unknown how that man came in contact with his attacker. but we spoke to a witness who had to tend to that man and call for help. >> we were just crossing the street, down the wrong side of the subway and we just saw him coming up the subway steps and he had -- bleeding heavily. that's what we saw already. we helped him out. pressure on his wrists. >> reporter: as that suspect was

we've seen no shortage of officers or detectives around this area. going down to the subway platform where in happened. i'm going to show you how they're blocking off access to not just the bleecker street subway station. bleecker street in general as the search continues for the suspect behind this early morning slashing. we're going to show you now what it looked like when we arrived. a large police presence going into the subway station. we're told by police that a male victim suffered slash wounds to both his neck and face on the 6 train platform around 3:30 this morning. we know his attacker fled in an unknown direction. police are telling me they don't know if that attacker acted alone. as we bring you back live, michael, according to one witness, this is a very bloody scene. that men tended to that male victim at bellevue hospital listed in stable kchblt again, police are now blocking off exits to the area. as lauren has been saying, the 6

bleecker street station as this investigation continues. back to you. >> tracie, thank you. new this morning, investigators are now trying to figure out what sparked a fire that killed one man at a home in long island. the fire started in the basement of the home on grand avenue in bay shore around 10:00 last night. they rushed to douse the flames. 62-year-old curly tutt was killed. several others who lived in the home escaped. in new jersey, police are trying to track down apparently hungry thieves who raided a refrigerator during a home invasion. luis rosales says a man and woman knocked on his apartment door in jersey city last month. he answered, they then forced their way into the home. rosales says the man threatened him with a knife. the woman sprayed his eyes with pepper spray. they ransacked his apartment and headed straight for the refrigerator where they took yogurt and chicken. >> she told me, poppy, sawyer,
